Northeast California includes
the northern section of Interstate 5, extending as far south as Redding
and as far north and east as the Oregon
and Nevada borders. Visitors to
this sparsely populated region will marvel at the density of the vegetation and
wildlife at the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity
National Park Area and stand in awe of the snowcapped grandeur of the Cascade
Mountains. Mount Shasta towers 14,162 ft (4,317 m) above the town of Mount
Shasta and tempts 15,000 new and experienced climbers to ascend to the summit
each year. Northeast California is a four-season playground and tourists will
find countless opportunities for fishing, hunting, rafting, snowmobiling, snowshoeing,
golfing and horseback riding. Many area museums detail local history and culture,
including the Fort
Crook Museum. Redding is the largest city in the area, but Yreka,
Weed and Mount Shasta
provide plenty of choices for accommodations, activities and special events.
